I inherited a .401 from my father who inherited it from my grandfather. As a curiosity, I took it to the local high end gun shop to see what it was worth. They could only find the number 5 stamped on it. It's stamped on the left side just above the trigger guard on both the upper and lower receiver halves. They put it at 80-85% and said it was worth $500-600.
My question is whether this is actually the serial number or if it's hidden in some other place.

That's in the same position as the serial number on mine....gee! #5. Got pix? Price is about right. Nice ones down here are $650, OK ones are $450.
