I just took apart my .401 and noticed that "SINGER" is stamped on the lower receiver, only visible when the upper is removed. I haven't seen this on other threads and was wondering if anyone else had seen something that looked like this.
This rifle is slightly different than others that I have seen and appears to be a later model. It looks to have had been number stamped separately from the serial number. Also a disc shaped object the size half dollar removed from the side of the butt stock and later patched with a wood plug.
Any thoughts?

kf, Welcome to the forum. Considering the uneven way that SINGER is marked, it would appear to be applied after the factory as an owners name, police department or the name of a correctional facility?. The same with the secondary number behind the trigger guard and the part of the stock which has been filled. That could have been for an identifying disk, such as would be found on some military rifles. Let us know what year it was made and any unusual features, so that we might be able to figure out more. Nice rifle and glad to have another 1910 owner here.

From what I have found, there looks to have been 20,787 Model 10s made. I would have one of the last 150 made, really "142” with mine at 20,645. I don’t have any info on which were produced in what years, except that it was produced from 1910 to 1936. I would speculate that it was made in either '35 or '36.
Thanks for the idea, there is a police department in Slinger, Wisconsin but not any other that I have been able to find with Singer in it. The search continues.
There does appear to be a number that was added and removed from in front of the magazine housing, on the underside of the receiver, and later removed / ground off. This would make sense being a service number for law enforcement.
