Hello everyone: I'm a new member from Chicago. I've joined primarily because my younger brother bought a Remington model 8 a year or so ago & I think I've fallen in love with it.
My main question is about calibers.... Am I correct in assuming that the model 8 was offered in a lot of calibers that are no longer **easily available today? Should I get a model 8, I want to be able to go to the sporting goods store & buy a box of ammo.....I don't want to have to get into reloading (I don't have the space).
That being the case, what calibers should I consider? My brothers is a .35 remington, which I liked quite a lot.
Also, the look of the model 81 is very appealing. Are there any pros/cons as far as choosing one model over the other?
Finally... I **LOVE** the artwork used on the front page of this group.....the man firing his model 8 from horseback. IS THAT AVAILABLE ANYWHERE? Perhaps on a wall-hanging tin or something???
Thanks!
TM

Originally, the Model 8 was first produced in .35 Remington. That is the only caliber which remains in production and for which you can buy newly manufactured ammunition. I think Wal-Mart carries it. The other calibers are the .25 Remington, .30 Remington and .32 Remington. These cartridges were designed to correspond to the .25-35 Winchester, the .30-30 Winchester and the .32 Winchester Special. They quit making the .25 Remington cartridge back in the 1950s. They quit making the .32 Remington in about 1977 and they quit making the .30 Remington in 1997.
The Model 81 is a 1930s redesign of the stock and forearm of the old Model 8 to make it look more "modern". It is a heavier gun, which helps with the recoil some. Everything else about how the gun operates is pretty much the same. They dropped the .25 Remington early on in the production of the Model 81 and added the .300 Savage cartridge in 1940. I don't know if they still make the .300 Savage cartridge, but the thing gives the Model 81 a wicked recoil....IMHO. I traded my 81 in .300 for a .401.
The picture is a detail from a larger painting (Goodwin?) which I cropped to use. I know someone in one of the sporting collectible websites was selling a print, so more may exist out there. Check on the Model 8 and 81 board.

Check on the Model 8 and 81 board. Ah.... Philip R. Goodwin. I did a quick search of his stuff online. I didn't run across the print in question, but I did see LOTS of his other stuff. BTW, it seems he must've liked the model 8 (or been paid to paint it), cuz it appears in several of his works. Neat-O. Talk about a nostalgic look at a bygone era! TM
