Was at the Phoenix gun show this past weekend, and saw an older gentleman walking around with a model 14. Upon exam, it was a carbine (30 Rem) with fingernail safety---and I love the looks of the M14 carbine! Rifle was in about 70% cosmetic condition, no rust or "fine patina", but was drilled&tapped on receiver and barrel. Owner wanted $500 for it, and when I (politely) stated that it was a shame it was d&t, he said that it don't hurt the shooting of it. He also went on to discuss how the .30 Rem was "much, much" more powerful than the 30 WCF. As you have probably guessed, I did not end up with the rifle! Would have gone $250, as it really looked cool, but saw no reason to piss the guy off, as he seemed pretty set on the price. Maybe next time---

The D&T converts a $600 gun into a $250-300 gun IMO. Being a carbine and with a fingernail safety adds about $150 X 2 to the value of a rifle with pushbutton safety up here in Canada.
Of course the 30 Rem is exactly as powerful as a 30/30 without the rim - does removing the rim really take away that much power? ;-)
