You know the operating rod that sticks out of the forearm. The one you push to open the breech. It has a crescent shaped cutout in it that travels right under the barrel. After you push on the operating rod to open the breech, the round end with the crescent shaped cutout is turned a little to the right or left and that holds open the breech. Don't get your finger or the webbing between your thumb and forefinger caught between the operating rod and the barrel....it'll give you a nasty pinch.
When you get a chance, post some pictures of you .401.

Thanks for the reply! I am hoping the three pics. am sending get through. The wood is in great shape, with the exception of a few minor scratches, and a hairline crack in the forarm. The bluing is near prisitine, and I have two matching four shot magaizines. Oddly, there is a recoil pad which is a Pachmyr Model #00001, which is the first of their line. I e-mailed the manufacturer for more info but, so far, no response. Instead of an overall length of thirtyeight inches, it is now thirty-nine w/the recoil pad. ( ) I have a box of nineteen rounds in the original (1946) container. Jethro.
