I have my Grandfather's 14 in .35 that I would like to know when it was made. It has the letter c on the left of the barrel. On the bottom of the receiver C 89XXX. My Grandfather put a round piece of brass on the butt grip and every time he killed a deer he would take his pocket knife and make a mark (4 lines and 1 crossed out to make 5). There are 14 notches on it. Many years ago when I was a kid I went back home to Pa. to go deer hunting and asked my Grandmother what happened to Grandpa's guns. Mom told me of his hunting adventures. I have his middle name and his rifle. I never knew him because he had the black lung and died young. Before Grandma passed on she told me who had the rifle. It was still in the family, but I had to do some detective work to track it down. It was worth it. I have shot the rifle and it shoots great. It has a steel crescent but plate. Nothing fancy, just a working man's gun.

You are so lucky to have been able to track it down and acquire it. What a wonderful connection to an important man in your life that you never got to met personally. So many of our families treasures are scattered to the four winds because long ago now in the past, folks had to make hard decisions because of a temporary exigency. I don't know anything about the Model 14, but I've always admired them, so much so that I want to get one for myself one day. Hang on to it and make sure it stays in your family. Oh..., and don't forget to enjoy it while you have it.

Your model 14 was made after 1917, If you look on the left side of the barrel there maybe a series of symbols, numbers and letters. If the last 3 (nearest the receiver) look like B M 7, this is probably a date code which means it was manufactured post 1920. But I am guessing that yours was before 1921. I have more info at home that I can check this evening.
I have two 14s they are excellent guns.

According to my book on 14s your date code should be _ R for 1924. The first letter is for the month and may be B L A C K P O W D E R or X. Jan = B for example.
