The local gun pusher is holding a model 81 with 2 magazines for me to look at. He says it is in great shape. I have been on vacation and have not seen the gun yet but he did not mention Police Equip Co or that the mags were 15 round models. What other removable mags were there and would it add to or hurt the value of the gun. I realize that a "Police" model has specific value to specific collectors. The price on the gun is $695, with some "wiggle room" usually he will eat the sales tax.

Dave, I think the magazines are worth the price without the rifle. I also sent you a P.M.

If the mags are 10 or 15 round, that is one H of a good deal. I have seen a single 15 round mag go for close to the price he is asking for the set. If they are the 5 shot mags for a kreiger conversion and the rifle is in good shape, it is still a good deal. Work on his wiggle room. Post some pics once you have it.

Well it is definitely a Krieger conversion with 2 mags. It has a Lyman peep sight and a Hawkins rubber butt pad and inlet sling mounts which are like a flattend u-shape rather than the single screwed in posts. The finish looks very good with few wear spots but the jacket and receiver have gone to plum. The barrel nut and barrel have a deep blue with no damage in the notches. The bore is bright and sharp no pits or wear. I will work up some pictures tonight. Price out the door $695. DOB 10/1936 S/N 103x.

First results with my .35 Rem at 100yds. Federal 200gr softpoints using a rest. Not too bad for the first time shooting a .35 Rem and my old eyes using the peep sights.

not bad at all! How did you like not having to load the rifle from the top?

It works pretty well. I fumbled a bit at first but once I got the first one in and saw how to mate a loaded one to the receiver it was pretty smooth. You have to hook the front of the magazine deep in the receiver then lift the rear to mate with the trigger guard latch. The front of the mag goes in a bit deeper before the rest goes than I was expecting. Both mags functioned flawlessly so I am a happy camper. However, top loading or single loading into the mag (in place) is not as easy as a standard magazine. I can see why hunters wanted this modification, there is an ad in the "BOOK" stating that the price of the mod was $20. Seems cheap even for the early fifties.
