Hello! I don't actually collect Winchesters except those that relate to mililtary use. I read on an Italian site that in 1915, the Italian flying corps - specifically balloon observers - used Winchester model 1907 rifles. Online, I see that France, England, Russia and even US military aviators used this rifle. I was especially surprised to see that Russia bought 150 1907s, and - if the information is correct - 1.5 MILLION rounds of ammo!!! If that's actually true, there must still be some of that quietly gathering mld in some dank Russky warehouse as we speak! Do you gentlemen have information of what serial number range 1907s would have been sent to Italy? Or what would be the best way to learn that? Thanks, and best regards!! Steve

Herbert G. Houze has put the most amount of research into the war use of the 1907 and 1910 rifles. Most of his information was gleaned from factory records which are housed at the Cody Firearms Museum at the Buffalo Bill Historical Center. I recommend his book: "Winchester Repeating Arms Company: Its History & Development from 1865 to 1981" as well as his 2003 American Rifleman article. Konrad Schreier also has a few tidbits in his 1990 article in ARMAX. I drew mostly from these sources when updating the wikipedia article on the 1907.
