I thought some of you shooters might enjoy this.
Its funny what we take for granted. I've heard a lot of folks complain about the recoil of the 8/81's especially in 300 Savage.
I'm leaving for Newfoundland moose hunting next week, taking my teenage son and a few friends along with. I bought my son one of the synthetic Savage Model 110's in 7 mm Magnum. I also do a little gun work for fun, and I just finished mounting a scope on my friends Stainless Synthetic Browning A-bolt in .300 Win Mag. I usually carry a Remington Model 7 Stainless Synthetic in 7mm Short Action Ultra Mag when moose hunting.
Anyway the point of this story is that I loaded up these three guns to head to the range this afternoon, and as an after-thought threw in a Model 81 in .300 Savage I bought a while ago.
So I fired about a box of factory loaded .300 Win Mags and a box of 7mm Mags, and a few 7 mm SAUMs.
Good Lord.
After I got some feeling back in my arm I put a half a box of 300 Savage through the old girl, and I swore it was almost enjoyable (well, shooting is always enjoyable, just sometimes more comfortable than others). Man o man those Mags are brutal after a few rounds. I guess you don't notice when your shooting after a moose, but I see how one could develop a flinch at the range quite easily !

Larry,
you should have finished off the recoil coctail with a box of 3.5" magnum 12 gauge to get that meat really tenderized! Good luck on the moose hunt! We all look forward to hearing and seeing about it.

I thought I would try posting a picture to see if it would work. My first attempt at this technology ! Shot this bull over in Newfoundland in 2006. Larry

It's not that the 8/81s are brutally punishing. It's just that the recoil is significantly more than one would expect from such mild rounds. But you are right, it is nothing like the magnum loudenboomers.

I hear ya Larry!
Like many of the guys here (ok, all the guys here) I love to shoot rifles. A few years ago, a friend bought a Ruger Number 1 in 416 Remington Magnum. Why, I don't know... Anyway, we took it to the local range and touched a few rounds off. I can't say that I liked the experience. That thing could give me a flinch in a hurry. He liked it even less than I did, so he traded it off. Good move!
I hope you have a good hunt. Make some moose meat! You know we'll want an update...
