I am looking for someone with John Henwood's book on The Forgotten Winchesters as a rare bird has appeared. The serial no. is in the 49K range, has the fixed rear sight and the bayonett lug. I need to know the distance from the rear sight to the receiver and the serial no range these were made. I'm going by memory and they were made in 37 and maybe 38 and the distance I'm looking for is 2 5/8" as I recall. The gun is on Gunbroker now if anyone wants to look. The rear sight is in the white and it was imported by Interarms so anything is possible.

Too cool! Serial number in the 49 thousand range is dated either 1941 or 42. Henwood only says that production of the Police model rifle began in 1934. He doesn't seem to give a serial number range for the Police rifle. I looked at the rifle on G broker and it has the hooked operating sleeve tip and the over-sized thumbpiece on the magazine catch and the sling swivels and bayonet lug which Henwood says are the hallmarks of the Police 1907. The only things Henwood says about the rear sight is that you could either get the regular #22 sight, "or a special non-adjustable sight. I haven't found anything about the distance from the rear sight to the receiver, but comparing the g broker gun with the illustration 3-11 in Henwood's book, it looks similar.

Thanks for the quick response and valuable information. I read somewhere that some of these were faked. I even saw the bayonett lug for an 07 on Ebay about 5 to 10 years ago. It looked like it was taken off a gun as the screws were boogered up. That rear sight looks like it's alum. I think it would be blued if it was steel.

I think it would be hard to fake that over-sized magazine catch.

That oversized mag. catch and release was standarized around 37 (again I am going from memory). Like I said I have seen the bayonet/front sight on ebay. That rear sight is in the white and I have sent several messages to the seller to measure the distance from the end of the receiver to the rear sight which should be 2 3/8". These Police Rifles were only made for 2 years because demand was poor as one can imagine. That serial # range would put it way out of that number. If the seller comes back with a correct measurment I will consider this gun to be authentic. Until then I am suspect.

I went ahead and bought that 1907 and it’s 100% legit with minty bore and mechanics and 95% +/- finish. I don’t like the idea of import stamps, but I’ve wanted one of these for 50 years, so whatever. Now, yet another Police rifle with bayonet lug has shown up on Gunbroker, and this one has the rare but impractical extra long magazine. Finish isn’t as good as the first one, but these really are bargains when it comes to extremely rare Winchesters rifles. www.gunbroker.com/item/928257015

Were there any foreign proof marks or any markings on the magazine?

That is very nice. I'm interested in the manufacturer of the 20 round magazine. I have been collecting and learning of the 1907's for 20 years or so now. I have NEVER seen a 20 round magazine for the 1907. It is kind of like the Unicorn of magazines. I heard the magazines were used in WWI in France, but that is only what I read.

I have heard about 15 and 20 round magazines, but this is the first one I have seen. I inquired on Gunbroker to the seller and was told there were no markings on the magazine.
