The Remington Model 8 and the Fabrique Nationale (F.N.) Browning Modele 1900 semi-automatic sporting carbine (carabine semi-automatique) look exactly alike, but because one was manufactured in the United States and the other was manufactured in Belgium, there are detail differences. Many FN Browning Mle 1900 rifles were built with a solid "rib" on top of the barrel. The Remington 8 could be purchased with an optional "pistol" grip stock, while ALL FN 1900s came with the "pistol" grip stock. Only 4,913 of the FN Browning rifles were made between 1910 and 1936. Between 1910 and 1921 FN made 2909 Mle 1900s. The highest production during a single year was 1927 when 402 were produced. The Mle 1900 only came in one caliber. "9mm pour carabine automatique Browning" was the same cartridge as .35 Remington.
There was an excellent article on the FN Browning Mle 1900 in the Belgian gun magazine "Fire" authored by Michel Druart.

So, the production of the FN 1900 began in 1910? I asumed that was made from 1900 on. Thanks Martin

beleg,
message me with your email and I can provide you with some detailed pictures of the FN Modele 1900
There are basically two types of FN 1900's. Ribbed barrel jacket with flip rear sight or unribbed barrel jacket with tangent rear sight. The latter is more rare.
- FN 1900's unlike Remington's model 8 or 81's, have inspector, view and nitro proofs on the reciever (right or left side depending on production time). The inspector, view and nitro proofs for early Fabrique Nationale produced firearms can be found in the book "Browning Sporting Arms of Distinction: Matt Eastman". There is also a miniscule amount of information in the book "FN Browning Armorer to the World:Gene Gangarosa Jr".
- FN 1900's have modified A5 Browning shotgun stocks and A5 Browning horn buttplates (2 types used), as well as slightly different safety levers compared to M8's. Forearm checkering varies in direction depending when the FN was made.
- Quite often you see late FN's without their operating handle bushing which is of the screw on type unlike the Remington model 8 and even unlike early FN 1900's.
- There is usually an inpsector's mark behind the pistol grip (very small square with a "D" or other letters in the middle) unless the stock has been heavily refinished.
