I bought a 1908 Remington Autoloading Repeating Rifle (pre-model 8) and a 1933 model 14 BOTH in 30 Remington.
My neighbor has a Model 14 in 30 Rem as well but only has about half a box of ammo.
I found some 30 Rem on Gunbroker as well as some from Colorado Cartridge Company.
One of the 20 round boxes had the case heads marked 30 30 WIN, they had the rims cut down and a groove cut for the extractor.
They were obviously formed from 30 WIN cases (on a lathe??).
I saw that some people used a lathe to cut the rim and form the
extraction groove but I don't have a lathe. I do have a 35 year old
drill press with a 16mm chuck.
I 'chucked up' a damaged 30 WIN case from my Winchester 1894 and used some half-round files to try to duplicate a 30 REM case. It fit the chamber of the Model 14 and ejected properly so the split/damaged test case worked but was not loaded. I discarded the damaged case.
The shoulder angle needs to be fire-formed to the 'sharper' REM 23 degree angle from the Winchester 15 degree angle so a lite first load should take care of that.
I started making a whole batch from once-fired 30 WIN cases. A member on the Texas Gun Talk forum asked if I could do a 'video' of the process so I dusted off my old Sony Handi-cam and uploaded a video to YouTube. It takes about 6 minutes to convert one case. I can do a few and then I get tired and bored so I stop.
When I have nothing to do for a while I convert a few more and after a few weeks there is a PILE of converted cases.
I now have several hundred converted cases that I need to fire-form with cast lead 150 grain .308 and a light load 10 grains of Trail Boss.
I'll have to use the Model 14 because I doubt the lite load will cycle the Autoloader.
Here is a link to my video if it gives anyone incentive to convert some for themselves.
