Wow, I just stumbled across this forum doing a little research.
I've carried on a love affair of the Remington 8's and 81's since I knew what a shooter was.
My Great-Grandfather carried a 25 Rem Model 8 all his life and my Grandfather carried a Model 81 300 Savage - it was the first "big game" rifle I ever held - shot - hunted with.
Since then, the family collection has grown as my family literally owns dozens of these great old Remingtons.
Personally, I've carried my Model 81 300 Savage into the field for over 20 years and will do so again next week. It has taken more than it's fair share of game, deer, elk, antelope, coyotes, and varmits of all sorts.
I have dozens of other rifles in the safe - all sorts of calibers from .22 to .416 Rigby, and I've hunted them all. Most of the 8's and 81's only come out to be admired. Come hunting season, it's this well worn old 81 that gets the nod nine times out of ten. I usually pack whatever rifle I am currently smitten with and throw in the 81 without a thought. Then it's usually the 81 that gets carried into the field. It just fits. It just works. It shoots where I aim. I know the rifle & it's an old friend now.
Last fall my 81 took both a nice Mule Deer Buck and nice Pronghorn Buck here in Colorado, People forget how flat the 300 Savage can shoot. And the 35 Rem is no slouch, as I have an equally worn 35 Rem Model 8 that occasionally does woods duty.
Anyway, glad I stumbled upon this forum and look forward to chattin' about the Great 8's & 81's.
