Packmule would be jealous. I believe that your gun has a Krieger removable magazine conversion. I'm quoting generally from Henwood. In the late 40s and 50s R. Krieger and Sons of Michigan offered a magazine conversion for Model 81s (I guess they could've done them on 8s too). Cost $20.00. They must have done quit a few because I've seen one as far afield as a gunshow in Albuquerque. Makes that gun a rarer variation than the standard Model 81 in .300 Savage.

hardrada55 just about summed it up, you got a Krieger conversion. Nice find! Looks like your rifle also has a Williams model SM scope mount. Looks like you're ready to hunt!

He was asking $350 but like the old saying cash talks and $250 took it home. How much does the scope base holes afect value. The scope is an old k4 with the fine crosshairs and the dot in the center.

Krieger modified the magazines that were on these rifles to be detachable. He also supplied spare magazines. All these magazines were 4 and 5 shot magazines. The longer magazines are what i associate with the Peace Officer Equipment Company's Special Police Rifle which had a 15 round magazine. I don't think any of these Krieger conversions has been made since the mid 1950s. I do remember seeing Krieger conversion magazines for sale on e-Bay, back before they got so radially anti-gun. If you keep an eye out for a couple of years you may find one.

I would not show my face in that guys yard again. If he finds out what the rifle was really worth, he will be sick. You cannot find a beat up plain Jane model 81 for that price. That rifle is worth at least 3 times what you paid for it.
The mounting holes will have some detraction for some buyers but the fact that it has the removable mag will mitigate that. If the scope works, leave it on.
Again,
You made one super find for that price.
