Hello, My name is Mark and I am an auto-loader addict and I need help. It all started out so innocently, I happened across a Winchester 1910 at a show and bought it, but before I had left the show there was a second 1910 in my other hand. Then later at another show, this guy waves a Winchester 1905 at me and said "it's just a .32, what harm is there in that" so it came home. I figured I had it under control, then the guy at the Pawn shop, said "hey why not have a 1907 in .351, you need it" so it came home. Then I found myself surrounded by enablers that only fueled my addiction. I knew that some would feel that I had a problem, so I started to disassemble them in secret and I hid my reloading components. Wallowing in my own self loathing, I crumbled when the Pawn shop guy offered me a 1905 in .35 WSL. At this point, I knew I had hit rock bottom and needed help, spurned by my loved ones and ignored by my cats , I would rise above and get help. I found that all of the help groups that I needed, had been lost to the Obama budget cuts. Feeling lost and vulnerable, I had gone cold turkey and avoided auto-loaders and any social events where they would be freely passed around. Life was improving......., until yesterday . I now have a Remington Model 8 ;D in .30 Rem that was sitting unused in another gents safe. It has seen use, but not abuse and it has a nice shiny bore. If I read the date code correctly, WX8, it should put it at AUG 1912. I will hopefully have some brass here soon and can start loading. I will promise to take some photos and get them up this weekend. My apologies to all of the hardcore Remington lovers, putting up with the previous Winchester references, my twisted sense of humor took over. I think I speak for most of us that we have a problem and DON'T want a cure. Mark

The lack of replies, shows how deeply this affliction runs and the denial it brings. The first step is admitting you have a problem! Know that there are others suffering this debilitating illness and there are people out there to help. I, along with a handful of volunteers are standing by to provide support when you are willing to call our hot-line. It's currently not working due to a number mix-up, but once we clear up this confusion with the phone-sex line , we will be ready to help. In the future, we will also be starting a program accepting donations which will be used to re-locate liberals to various polar regions, where they will be able to roam the wilderness freely. We understand that approach may not provide the relief from auto-loader addiction, but at least you will feel better. I hope I at least got a grin out of someone. Mark

I have no problems admitting my addiction. It is only sadness of not possessing one, and shame of breaking the Commandment of not coveting my neighbor's goods, that kept me from expressing my admiration of that fine piece of craftsmanship. Well Done, Sir!!

Hovercat, Covet away, that is the best way of driving yourself firmly into the frenzy. If you are looking for something to start out with, let people know. I always seem to ferret out listings and would be glad to pass them on to you and I am certain other members would be glad to help out. I had a guy I sold something to on GB last year and he put me on his blanket e-mail list. I labeled them as SPAM, but one of them was him trying to sell some guns. It turned out one was a 1910 minus a magazine for $300. Not being greedy, I forwarded it to my friend that has a .351 and he made a deal with the guy. It will hopefully show up next week. Deals are out there and you never know when they will pop up. By the way, everytime I see your username, I snicker, not at you, but because I love cats and that guy that built it has a twisted sense of humor (my kind).

good looking Model 8 you got there. I'm sure you noticed the repair code of "WX3"...the "3" looks backwards but that's common. This code indicates Remington performed repairs on the rifle in August, 1929.
Nice original rifle you got there.

81police, Thanks for the compliment and I had no clue to the code. I seemed to have forgotten to bring up the "stock find", when I removed the butt plate I removed a 1926-27 Texas resident hunting license. When I informed the guy I got it from, he said that made sense as he was told that the grandfather of the guy he bought it from, was a Texas Ranger. Unfortunately, there is no database to locate people that were in the Rangers, so it just winds up being a neat story of an officers old saddle gun. I have an 1877 Colt in .41 that is mechanically mint with a perfect bore that had the hammer spur cut off and the barrel shortened. That has a similar story as a San Diego officers' belly gun. I didn't have to pay extra for the story and I guess the guy that consigned it was in his 80's and also said it was his grandfathers. Doing the math, that would have gone back to the early 1900's and the gun was built in 1884. Considering the condition, it probably was something he picked up used and considered it old enough to cut it down. If only they could share some stories! I was considering following your lead for a carbine conversion, but have decided this Model 8 is just too nice to alter it, so I will wait for a road-kill example to find its way to me.

awesome buttstock find! Of course I'am biased because I'm a native Texan.
The carbines are cool, a little more handy, a little lighter weight with a very nominal sacrifice in muzzle velocity (approx. 100fps). I'm going to take my Model 8 carbine hunting one of these days...if I can ever put down this AR15, lol.

AR15!!!!! You polymerized, alloyed heathen! ;D Whatever will your mother think of you, not to mention all of those fine old Remmy's. Just kidding, I have owned my share in the past, but I always was bored with them. They are a great workhorse and capable of some great accuracy, but I never could get enthusiastic enough to keep one very long. As for the carbine conversion 8, I love short barreled rifles and usually have no morals when it comes to making alterations, but this one made me pause. As I have said before, I have an affinity for road-kill and I will wait for a suitable donor. Just for kicks, have you ever considered rebarreling one to 6.8SPC? The thought has crossed my mind ;D and wondered how far you wander to the dark side of creativity. Mark

The barrel finally showed up last Thursday and is being turned down to .740". I haven't been able to locate a chambering reamer, so I am considering cutting the chamber with a boring bar. I will hopefully have some time free from the wife Saturday, to make some progress.

Mark I haven't considered 6.8SPC, but I have thought about 458 Socom. Don't know if the cartridge dimensions are even feasible but it would make a great short range thumper.

81, Sorry for the long delay replying, life has been a bit hectic and I haven't dabbled with much for the past month. I turned the .25 blank down and then gave it a taper contour by hand. I got pi$$ed off at my tool post on my lathe and finally ordered a new Aloris CXA tool post a couple of weeks ago, but my order has been languishing while they provided a T-nut from the manufacturer and it won't show up till Thursday. As for the SOCOM, the base diameter would eliminate it as an option since there is no way to allow another .080" diameter without a radical change to a large number of components. I will be looking forward to tomorrow, two of my friends and I will be going to the range and I will be shooting some of my oddballs, some of which I haven't fired yet. I never loaded any ammo for the Model 8 and have only fired the 7 or 8 rounds that it came with, but I plan on shooting my .401 again, hopefully my new approach to brass will be more forgiving in my oversize chamber. I will do some digging and see what heavy hitters could work in the Model 8/81 platform, but face it, the .35 is no slouch . Mark

you seem to be the reloading/loading go-to-guy Crank. What about a 50 Beowulf in an M8?
