A friend brought be a gun he inherited. It says on the barrel Winchester Self Loader 35 cal. On the magazine it says .351. The last patent date was 1910. It has a 22 inch barrel. I would like information on it. I have learned it may be a .35 or a .351. There is no model number on it. 5438 is the serial number.

The model # should be on the tang. Where the metal meets the stock, top. Model 1905 or 05, .35WSL Model 07, .351WSL Model 1910 .401WSL
I would bet on the barrel before the magazine. Mags are easy to swap and folks on the forum say that .351WSL mags work for the .35WSL. If you are not sure, a chamber cast will tell. The only difference between the cases is length and a lot more powder. You cannot interchange either way.

Thanks for that info. It's there, the only place I didn't look. It's a model 1905. I think it's a 351 caliber. That is what is on the magazine. OOPs, I didn't finish your message, jumped to look at the tang.

dwham, I was one of the people that say you can use 1907 .351 Magazines in a 1905. I have both and they work fine. Hovercat gave you some good info. Don't try to fire .351 ammo, even if they fit the chamber, the breech block weight is inadequate and mayhem would ensue. Most likely it is still chambered for .35WSL, it is the easieast of the WSL family to make ammo for, since you simply reduce the diameter of .38 special cases to fit into the magazine, load and shoot. It is an extremely pleasant round to shoot and very accurate with lead bullets. I personally feel the 1905 is downright graceful, even though I enjoy my 1907 and 1910. You serial number indicates a 1905 manufacture date. Keep us informed.
