Here is a picture of a French "Fusil Halle" circa 1904-1905. As you can see, one of them is clearly cut for a sporter style stock and the picture calls it a "Fusil de Chasse". Hunting rifle. The lever behind the trigger guard looks strange. There was another weird early French semi-auto, the Hastron rifle, which was a "blow forward" design. A similar lever was used to move the barrel forward and allow chambering of the first round from the magazine for the first shot. This may a similar idea. The only other French Vintage Semi-Automatic Sporting rifle I've ever heard of was the possibility of a rifle version of the Clair shotgun.
