???I just picked up a near mint 1941 81 in 300. It has the receiver sight and 2 holes where the rear sight was. OK, I bought a rear sight blank and screws off ebay. One problem, the holes are not threaded and the 2 screws provided are too small anyway. How was the rear sight attached? How do I attach the sight blank? Can any one recomend the best manual for takedown/cleaning and general maintainance?

The factory rear sight was held in place by small threaded insert that was inserted into the 2 holes in the barrel shroud from inside the shroud itself. I guess there is a possibility that the piece is actually still in the shroud and just rattling around between the barrel and the shroud or it could be missing altogether. Easiest way to check that would be take the for-end wood off and then take the barrel assy off the receiver. Then grab ahold of the barrel extension, where the caliber is stamped, and pull it back out of the barrel shroud. Don't pinch your fingers. That piece might just fall out of there for you as you will be able to compress the springs inside the barrel shroud and pull the barrel back out of the shroud for a few inches. If it does, putting it back in place is more of a pain as you will have to take the barrel out of the shroud. If it doesn't, you'll need to find one somewhere. Not sure on thaht account as that would be an odd ball piece to find. As far as cleaning goes, doing what I just listed allows you to do the basic bore cleaninig and wipe down. If you are looking for a complete disassembly down to small pieces, I think it is listed here on the forum somewhere.

Thanks 2v, I really appreciate the info. I couldn't figure why; even Bubba would drill those out larger. I'll do as you suggested and hope it falls out. I guess I'll have to make a pin wrench to remove the barrel nut and then break down the barrel assembly. Hopefully I'll be able to get it back in. If it doesn't fall out I'll have to make something "carefully" Thanks again, Drew

I'll see if I can find a picture of the piece incase you have to make one. As far as taking the barrel apart, if you have or can get a WinChoke choke wrench used for the screw in chokes for Winchester shotguns they work prefectly for taking the barrel nut off. Then, any flat piece if steel that fits in the slots of the barrel shroud nut will work to loosen that up. That's the one you need to watch as when you get to the end of the threads, the springs inside the barrel tend to fly out of the barrel. As long as you go slowly and keep pressure on the nut, you'll be all set. Don't forget the barrel will fall out of the other end of the shroud when you take the barrel nut off so don't hold it over your toes.
