Well I travelled to tulsa this weekend for the "world's largest gun show" Wanenmacher's. After perusing every table of the 11 acre building and seeing literally thousands of firearms, I only saw 4 model 8/81's.
1. A nice early clean 8 marked 25-35 Rem, the asking price was $900 2. A glossy reblued 81 with a modern case asking $900 3. A nice original 81 in .30 asking $550 4. A Special Police 81 marked L.A. Co. Sheriff's Dept. "No. 54" (I think). The rifle had some of the worst custom checkering i'd ever seen, a horribly fitted recoil pad, non original sling swivel eyelets, a chromed bolt carrier and charging handle, and 3 extra holes in the barrel shroud forward of the rear sight. The asking price was $2300. I passed it up only to return an hour later to inquire about it. The seller who was a bit rude, had removed the price tag and said he was now asking $2800 because a lot of people had been showing interest. Crook.

I always wanted to go to that show, but it's a long way from New Jersey. It's funny, but I experienced the same situation of a dealer marking UP an item while at a gun show. I was looking at a bayonet for my Stevens Trenchgun, and the dealer remarked that if I didn't take it, he was going to tack on another $100 to it because he had several people ask about it. I thought: If it wasn't selling at the original price, why the heck would you think it would sell for MORE? Needless to say, I didn't buy it, and I don't regret the decision. People never cease to amaze me.
Cam, did you get the S/N of the 81 Special?

Koz,
I believe it was something like 188XX, I can't remember the exact number.
