Well, it finally got here! S/N is 187XX. The rifle's S/N is stamped on the magazine's front spine, left side. Condition wise, it looks just like the one 81Police posted. The only difference is that mine is equipped with a tang mounted peep sight. The sight looks like it has been on the gun for awhile. Has anyone seen one mounted on a Police Gun? Does this detract at all from the value?
Overall the gun's condition has completely exceeded my expectations. I just got photobucket, so pics will be posted soon.
Once again thanks to all the members of the forum for sharing their knowledge. I can't wait to take this to the range.

Congratulations Koz! I've never seen one with a tang peep but that doesn't do anything to the value in my humble opinion unless it's got extra holes in the reciever. Don't keep us waiting too long for those purrty pictures, I'm excited for you =)

I took the 81 down to our local range. I shot 20 rounds of 200gr Winchester Silvertips. I didn't find the recoil to be bad at all. I assume that a lighter bullet would have even less recoil. Very accurate and controllable. Offhand, I squeezed off all 15 rounds in fairly rapid succession, and all 15 hit a chest sized target at 100 yds. It's no AR-15, but I was pretty impressed. The only bad part was that the shells ejected straight back and would tag me right in the forehead. I'm glad I wore a hat. Do they all do this? Anybody prefer a lighter bullet than the 200s?

Welcome to why we wear a hat! Not, unlike in " Fiddler on the Roof" - "...because we have to move around so much" - only in our case it's for the case ;D or to avoid them. My factory .25's @ 117gr and reloads are so hot that I've learned to wait several minutes before picking them up. Especially, since I shoot left handed, I have paid attention to what others have said regarding the "8/81 brand" - forearm, the inside crease of the elbow, then there are the real fun ones: down the front of your shirt. (You learn to leave your shirt un-tucked real fast!) I've even very quickly pulled a couple out of my shirt pocket when I smelled something burning! Now, I do long sleeves and flaps on the pockets - a bit warm when it's 116 out, but makes me get up earlier! I have not found the other cals to be as hot, but worth paying attention as to where they land. And, just for jollies, I don't know about anyone else but I've found the 300 Savage to be the most consistently accurate for my forehead/hat (Didn't do bad at the other end on the target either.)

Had my 35 (model 8) bounce one off the top of the reciever then off my upper lip. Didn't feel real good. Amazing how hot those cases are. It only touched my lip, but burnt it anyway.

I'm glad I found this forum. I am in the process of buying a model 81 off of a friend and am quickly learning the quirks of these rifles. Good to know about those casings.
