I have a late 40s 81 in 300 savage that looks like the butt was shortened at the factory for a pad. The guy I got this from said it had a rock hard red rubber pad on it when he got it, he replaced that pad with a less than wonderful modern pad. The cutoff looks factory with the sealing varnish and the varnish on the rest of the stock matching also theres no chips around the edges or saw marks. It would be a great help to me if anyone knows what a late 40s period factory butt pad should look like or better yet post a picture of one. Thanks 14delta

My Model 81 is also a late 40s vintage rifle ('48). It has a Remington logo black painted checkered aluminum butt plate that is what I believe to be the "standard" item.

tnrifleman This rifle is also 1948 vintage and you're right the aluminum butt plate is the correct standard plate. My rifles butt stock is 1/2" shorter than the normal 13 3/4" and doesn't show any of the normal signs of being cut after it left the factory, It really has me thinking that it might have been ordered with the butt pad from the factory. I'd like to find out what they were using at Remington at that time for butt pads unfortunately it seems like most of the old pads have been replaced over the years. so I'm still in the dark as what to put on the rifle. Thanks 14delta(Bill)
