I've noticed on a few model 8's that the bolt carrier is cracked or chipped on the top portion of the extractor lip groove. I'm not sure exactly what causes this, maybe you gunsmiths can provide some insight, but it seems to occur in the same area on the bolt carrier on early model 8's. I don't think it's a frequent occurence, i've only seen a handful of rifles like this. It does not appear to affect the function of the rifle nor the extraction. I posted this on the other forums as well.chipped bolt carrier with extractor lip exposeda good bolt carrier and extractor

Interesting. FWIW, none of mine have issues. I see a .35 and a .25 bolt in your pics so it doesn't appear to be caliber specific.

Here's another example of a cracked bolt carrier, this time an M8 in .30Rem on the right-hand side.

It looks as though the chipping occurs where the lugs on the extractor would be with the bolt head extended. Possibly caused by someone who did not know better attempting to pry or twist the extractor out of the bolt carrier.
