This is to inform those of your on the forum that are interested in this rifle or would like to know more about it... www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=122089775I originally emailed the seller regarding the rifle not having several distinct characteristics of true Special Police 81's such as; 11 1/4" extended forearm, correct markings of "POLICE GUN - Property Of", no factory eyelet sling swivel in the buttstock (or corresponding filled hole), nor the rifle's SN in the correct place on the magazine. Here is the seller's response... Good Afternoon : It's always a pleasure to hear from a collector that knows what he's talking about....This rifle is not a Remington designated police version as you very accurately noted. This is a standard Model 81 that has been stamped with a department designation for arsenal/ issue. There were apparently several agencies that did this....taking a standard rifle, since the Police versions were very hard to get, with long lead times and added expense...and the FBI in that era took precedent as the major buyer with their specialized specifications. This one is in unusually very good condition, since most rattled around in police car trunks for most of their working lives. Regards So I just wanted y'all to be informed, this is not a true Remington produced Special Police 81 but apparently an aftermarket conversion. Thanks, cam

Thanks for the heads up. In the end, he didn't correct the mis-impression he was creating by describing it in the title as "Remington 81 Peace Officer Detachable Mag", i.e., that this was a Special Police model rifle modified by the Peace Officer Equipment Co for Remington. He's relying on the buyer's ignorance and he probably doesn't see much of a distinction, what with all the dollar signs floating around in his field of vision. Though I would imagine that any modified 81 with a 15 round mag and police provenance would bring some kind of premium over a plain jane 81. OTOH, this gun could have been "made up" yesterday from an 81 and a Peace Officer magazine for all we know.

Thanks Cam, As normal you were right on top of this - I doubt that I would have caught all the things you did, but I'll know to look next time. Appreciate your work and post.

I agree with 81 Police that this rifle is suspect. The mag in my police model does not have the rifle serial number on it. I'm not sure if they all did. Mine does have the caliber stamped on the mag as it should be. The one in the auction does not. The Patent stamping appears sloppy on the auction mag.
Who knows what the pedigree is of this rifle.
I think these detractions deduct some from the value to the knowledgable collector.

I can't believe that rifle went for $2358.30! I was going to bid on it until I read the comments posted here. Thanks. I'd hate to plunk down almost $2400 to later find out I had purchased a "regular" 81 that was doctored to look like a Special Police. Of course, as a novice to the 81 community I wouldn't be able to tell the difference between the two. That is why it is so important to have a resource like this forum.

I'm glad we could help Koz.
That rifle was definitely misrepresented . As can be seen by that email I received, the seller knows what he is selling, but he is hoping he can make money from other's lack of knowledge.

Although I'm new here, I've been around the trollop wagon awhile. 81Police the seller obviously thumbed his nose at you and his pigeon as he went to the bank...My 30 year military career taught me certain words and phrases to describe the flimflammery he perpetuated but my scant (hour membership here) senority here prevents me from saying what we all know to be the truth. Thanks for trying to steer him straight. If he were an honorable man he would have either posted a copy of a letter from the LE Agency to support his wild*ss claim or thanked you and apologized by correcting his post....
