Hi, I'm new to the forum. I am interested in purchasing Model 81 Police Special. The only problem is that they are so scarce that I can't find any data on their current value. Can any of the experts tell me what I can expect to pay for one of these rifles? Thank you very much for your help.

Welcome to our humble forum - as to experts? Not sure any of us would jump up and say me to that, but collectively we have been able to pool our info, experience and knowledge to help out a lot of folks.
Your question regarding a police rifle is very interesting. There's probably not a one on us that wouldn't give a bunch (just short of the first born) to get one if he could - assuming he had the resources at the time one became available ("I was thinking of selling the farm anyway", so to speak) - like you said they are indeed rare.
As to how much are they worth, I'll start the ball rolling with - depending on condition, whatever you can get it for! In other words, if it was in working order and good condition for it's age, I'd negotiate hard but I would not leave without it - usually, a good eal is always tops on my list but with these I'm not sure that will ever happen.
Sorry that doesn't exactly answer your question, but it's as direct as I can get. Now we'll let the others jump in and see what they've paid for one, etc. (And personally, just out of curiosity, I'd like to know if anyone that doesn't already have one has ever walked away from one that was in working order?) Of course I'm kidding to a certain point, I'm not sure where I'd draw the line but it would likely be higher then I've ever paid for anything else.

You say you are interested, does that mean you found one or looking for one ? Hi, I'm new to the forum. I am interested in purchasing Model 81 Police Special. koz5614,
First welcome to the forum! As to your question here is my take on it. Special Police 81's are indeed hard to come by and thus the prices reflect that. An 81 in comparable condition to the one pictured below would likely fetch $3,000 or more for any collector. With these rifles though it's hard to be picky because when you see one you better jump all over it. Several years ago my father and I came across an 81 Special Police and paid what it was worth, a couple years later we came across a POEC 8 and nearly stole it. So you can see a lot of it depends on who's selling it too and how much they think it's worth. How much are you willing to pay is the real question. I might be willing to pay more for a rifle from a Texas municipality than someone from another state. I believe there are a couple other members here with police 81's, maybe they'll have input from their experiences as well. Good luck! cam

UGH! I wish I found the forum sooner. The Model 81 that I am looking at is going for around $2500. Rated at 85%+. Although it is not drilled/tapped, the receiver is stamped with the PD's name. I thought it was an awful lot of money, but I also said that a couple of years ago when I bought my 1941 Johnson with Bayonet for $2200. The 81's probably gone by now, but if not, I will jump on it. If I'm lucky enough to get it, I'll post pics. Thanks again for the info.

You bet, jump all over it if you still can. If you decided you are not interested, let us know - the buying line will start quickly! Bluebook says these have not become collectors YET - but someone forgot to tell a whole bunch of us.

Well, looks like I missed it! I left a couple messages for the seller, but no response. I guess it's gone. FYI - The gun was made in 1942 and was owned by the LA County Sheriff's Dept. Well now I know to jump on the next one. Thanks again to the members of the forum for their input.

PERSISTENCE PAYS OFF! ;D The gun WAS still for sale. The owner, a farmer, said he just got "lazy" and never called anyone back. Although his price was firm at $2495, he felt bad about not calling me back and picked up the shipping costs. I jumped on it.
The gun is stamped on the receiver: "Police Gun - Property of Los Angeles Police Sheriffs Dept, #6". It has a sling swivel eye on the butt and one on the barrel jacket. The detachable mag is marked with the POE logo, patent date, .35 caliber. In addition, the serial number of the rifle is stamped on the mag.
Thanks again to the members shared their expertise. As soon as the gun comes in, I will post pics.

Sounds like a good one. LA Co Sherrif's should be a little more collectable than most others. (my opinion)
