I have a .30-cal, model 8 manfactured in 1907 - based on information provided in the previous forum. It was originally purchased by my grandfather and served him and my dad as a hunting rifle. The gun hadn't been fired in 40 years (since my high school days) so I got some ammo and proceded to fire it at 50, 100, & 150 yards. Dang!!!! It shot great. Where can I get ammo? Any reloading information would also be greatly appreciated.

Hey, great to have you on the forum! About reloading, you know, I purchased one of those little Lee Loaders in .30 Remington, a box of 150 grain round nose .308 bullets and a can of IMR-3031 and and a plastic hammer and now that's what I reload with for my Model 8. Works like a charm and is pretty cheap. Look on the auction sites for a .30 Remington Lee Loader. We're going to chat tonight 01 15 09 at 8pm CST.

Last time I checked Reedsammo.com has the best prices on loaded 30 rem ammo and unprimed brass. As far as shooting the model 8 goes, you are right John Browning designed a great gun. Also, you can use 30-30 win loading tables for the 30 rem. One advantage is you can load spitzer bullets for better ballistics beyond 150 yds.

Carp,
Welcome to the forum. Your Model 8 sounds like a real treasure, given it's family history and the fact that it is a good shooter. Loading your own ammo adds to the experience and pleasure of owning a vintage firearm. Enjoy that wonderful rifle.

Just recently acquired a model 81 myself in .30 remington... ammo is out there on the internet...but expensive... if you know someone who handloads... check online for the loading dies... just got a set under $50 myself and a friend has offered to reload for me... If you have gun shows in your area... you might luck out and find some loaded ammo there... I did recently in Richmond Virginia for $23 a 20 round box... kicked myself later for not buying more... my 81 is supposedly the model made for the FBI with rear adjustable peep site... great condition and very accurate... my favorite rifle... and i hope to find one in .35 remington

Welcome carp!
As the others have said, .30 Remington ammo is still out there but it's getting scarcer and more expensive. Just checked Buffalo Arms: they've got .25, 30, and .32 Remington ammo listed. Kinda pricey though, $37 - $39/ box of 20.
Honestly, if you're planning to shoot one of these very much, reloading is going to be your best route in the long run.
