I just bought a model 81 in .300 savage and found this forum looking for info, etc. I live in Northern California and plan to use it to hunt pigs. This is actually the first hunting rifle I've owned.

Welcome zznz3z! I think you'll enjoy owning such an well made and historically significant rifle. Many of the members of the forum also use their Remington Autoloading Rifles on hogs. Anyway, make yourself at home and enjoy!

You picked a great 81 caliber for hog hunting. Good luck and be sure to add to our hunting harvest post when you bring down some meat. Welcome to the forum!

Good choice of caliber. I used it this past summer to take out several pigs in Texas. I would have liked to take my 81 in the same caliber on the trip too, but alas, Mrs. Monkeyboy said only one toy. So the scoped Savage 99 went instead. Such is life. Here in California, that rifle/caliber combo makes a dandy deer rifle too.

zznz3z,
Welcome to the forum. Congratulations on getting a fine classic hunting rifle. It should serve you well when you go after those hogs. I also hunt with a Model 81 in 300 Savage and have been seriously considering a hog hunt early in 2009. Here's to our success!

Thanks for all the welcomes, I just picked my rifle up from the store today. I can't wait to take it out to sight it in. By the way I live in Santa Rosa, Ca. Any others out there who live close?
