Do any of you guys have more info on these rareties than what is in the Henwood book? I have run across a rifle that has everything but the extended finger groove forend. 25Rem, correct butt stock, correct sling swivel, Lyman 48 mounted to the right of the receiver, rear sight holes filled, target type front sight. Serial number(s) are in the right range. Receiver and barrel are mismatched similar to other military rebuilds. Does not look like it ever had the barrel band forend. Thats the only missing link but did all 25 rifles get that? I bought it for the barrel as the bore is mint, but when I received it and compared it to pictures in Henwoods book, I started wondering what I had. Bought it from a guy who's had it for 20 years who had purchased it from a older gent who was selling off a bunch of rifles. If it's a fake, it was done years ago and not by the current seller as his asking price was cheap and he appears to just have some general knowledge about our favorite rifles. I'll try to get some pictures up later tonite and get the serial numbers up also. Any info beyond Henwoods would be appreciated. Thanks, Pete.

Working on that now. If you have Henwoods book there is a picture on page 116. or, the last issue or so of American Rifleman had a picture of it also when they did the article on Remington Auto's. Not sure why they picked that picture as it's not really the most familar version of the Model 8.

There's a photograph on page 140 of Hatcher's Notebook of the Model 8 configuration used in 1930 for tactical training purposes. This is part of his chapter "The Military Semiautomatic Rifle" which is itself a very good read. Follow the link, click the "Preview" button under the book cover image, and skip to p. 139, 140 for the photograph: books.google.com/books?id=yESNUKSg5aMCOr here is the photograph with caption: Also, the text of the American Rifleman article is available online, the photos, including the military version, cycle through on the fourth page: www.americanrifleman.org/nov08_centuryRem2.html

Ok, Shutterfly apparently does not work when trying to download pictures or it's to smart for this guy. I will open up an account tomorrow on Photobucket and see if I can make that work. Serial numbers are 45860 on the reciever and 45741 on the barrel assembly. Falls into the range of the 25 rifles sent to Springfield Armory. To further thicken the plot, this rifle came from CT where the previous owner resides, the guy he bought the rifle from was from CT and of course, Springfield Armory is also in CT. Makes me wonder.

Pete, you should probably post this question to the RSA forum if you have not done so already. You should probably send a question to the American Rifleman, they may have contacts with the information you need. Dave

Thanks RMH for those links, I'll look at them today.
Tbury, I haven't done so but I am going to. This is the Mod 8 you had seen. I didn't give it much thought as the price was cheap and the barrel was mint. It wasn't until I had it in my possession that it reminded me of the pictures I had seen of a Trials rifle. Now that I have it, I'd hate to switch barrels and ruin what might be a piece of Model 8 history.

good lookin rifle Pete! I have never had one in my hands, but from pictures seen of "U.S. Trials" rifles they have a military type rear sling swivel similar to this...I cannot tell if your rifle has that type of swivel from your pictures, but the presense or absense of corresponding mounting holes would be a tell tale sign.

Hi there 81police, here is a picture of the sling swivel in the stock. Looks like the same to me. Wish I could verify whether they all got retrofitted with the longer forend or any facts on that.

I dont know Pete, and there may not ever be a way to know, but at least you got a good bored .25, that's a prize in itself! You could always fashion a forend + barrel band and make a ultra cool replica?

Thought about that. Got a guy that is good with wood up here in Syracuse, but the barrel band might pose a problem due to the size of the barrel shroud. Got a guy off of the RSA Forum from PA that owns a verified Trials Rifle. We are talking back and forth, may even take it to him for him to look over. He hasn't replied since I sent him the pics. We'll see what he says.
