I just got a 1910 Winchester Self Loading .401. I took it apart to clean it and discovered that there are no recoil buffers - not one. My other Self Loaders have them (1905, 1907). I can't find an exploded view diagram for that rifle. I'm guessing that Winchester didn't stop using them in 1910. Does anyone know if the buffers from the .351 will fit, and are there two?
Thanks.

the recoil buffer assembly is the piece behind the spring in picture .You will notice one side has a line and that is the cap .If there is no gap between the cap and cylinder the buffers are finished and should be replaced. The picture shows the gap as there are new buffers in the assembly hope this pic helps and the rod is touching the buffer assembly Cheers Peter

This is what I found. All metal, no buffers.

Ah ha...now I get it. The buffer is in the cylinder. I pulled out the two buffers. Do you know where can I buy them? Thanks.

There are 2 thin buffers in the cylinder .Numerich carries buffers for wsl rifles .I made my own from UHMW plastic I sourced from our local hydralic shop which actually seems to rebound unlike the fiber that the originals are made from. Hope this helps Peter

Thanks for the info. I was a little slow on the uptake with that one.
One more question - my .401 does not have an "operating sleeve spring" (fits inside the (the editing software won't let me describe the sleeve) sleeve and rests against the bolt guide rod). I'm guessing it's missing, or did they do away with that part?
Numrich has them for the .351, so it's probably the same spring.

I was just on the numerich site and there are no buffers in stock for the 1910 ,so I would suggest getting the 1907 and modifying them on a lath to fit by making them just a bit thicker than what came out .If they are a bit thicker it is ok as long as you can fit the cap back on . Yes the plunger springs are the same as the 07 .To put the plunger spring in push it into the plunger and you will notice two holes in the plunger to put a wire through to hold the spring in place till you get in position and pullout the wire Without doing this there is a chance the spring will bind and not remain properly into the plunger tube ,but sometimes you get lucky and it does .

Thanks again for the info. I'll get the spring and buffers from Numrich, and trim/rework the buffers to make them fit.
I just got the .401 after looking for a long time. It's in good shape overall. I have the .32, .35 and .351 so this rounds out my collection.
