Hello, I am into primarily Remington 8/81 and 14's but have a couple of grandsons coming into the age where they are interested in starting to hunt with the family. We are a serious bunch when it comes to deer and granddad (me) likes to see the kids using his old guns. For these younger guys the autos are what they like but the Rem Model 8/81 are bit heavy to handle for youngsters just getting started. I have been looking at Winchester Model 100's in 243 of late. The carbine model in this caliber looks like it might make a good handy little deer gun for a 12 year old. Light, short, fast handling with low recoil and easy to mount a scope on. At any rate I would love to chat with anyone who has had some experience with these guns. I have found a few on the lists but the asking prices are somewhat high for the 243 models and these rifles have a bit of a bad reputation. I have gained a bit of information reading here in this list but its always nice to talk with someone who has had some experience with the gun. Looks like I would have to pay in the $500 to $700 dollar range for one and some extra knowledge about them seems like a good idea first.

I wish I knew more about the Winchester 100. I like the Harrington and Richardson Ultra Automatic in .243 also.

Well so far Hardrada55 I havent found out much. Seems they have a rep for not feeding well if one lets them get dirty. Take down looks to be a bit tricky too. I found a few on the auction sites that had badly cracked/broken stocks. Seems that if the bolt is not retracted you cant get the action out of the stock and if you try and force it a broken stock is the result. I did glean that its a gas piston operated system. Going to keep on looking but I am not willing to pay someone on line for a reproduction take down manual to find out just how they work. At least not before I actually buy a rifle.

Well, after having a chance to look over a couple of these rifles at a local gun shop and finally finding some background information on them from those who have owned or collected them I have decided to pass on buying one. They are an OK rifle at best in the accruacy and dependability areas it seems. I have to admit that the build quality is really not up to that of the old Remingtion M8/81 or M14/141. Like I said OK but thats about it. The prices these guns are being offered at are just to high. I could buy some very nice old Remingtions for the going asking price on good condition Winchester Model 100's. Just my opinion but I would rather spend my money on something else in the vintage semi-auto field.
