Fired this rifle for the first time on Sunday, it was great. The only bullets I could find in Calgary were 123gr Hornady sp's. They shoot well enough but I would love to hear what some other folks use, especially for cast. While I have no interest currently to cast my own I do have a source for 120gr in what ever hardness I want. The goal is to shoot very accurate ammunition that is easy on the pocket book. Current load was FC match primers and 10gr of H110 under the 123gr Hornady .310 . Velocity spread was quite bad. I suspect the bore to be fouled. It looks like a mirror but that means very little. I was anywhere from 1450 to 1600. That is worse than my old Lee Metford! ;D However it put four into an inch at 100yds, the fifth high and right another inch. Looking forward to some insight. I also have IMR4198, SR4759 and even IMR3031 but I doubt the last is hot enough. The rifle is a Savage 23C which can take the full potential of this cartridge. Thanks for your help!

now those are custom sandbags! I forgot to bring my "sight vice" with me and had to use the sand bags an elderly gentleman gave me. He was in the marines if I recall and was a pretty good shooter. He was 80 when he gave me them and didn't make it long past that. Thanks Sidney! I shot those tight groups with the Brno off those things too, amazing how sometimes less is more. lol I had to bite my lip not to laugh when he gave them to me, he was pretty proud of them. Thanks for your help 8mm-06. Looking forward to the info.

Hey Supersporter, This thread hasn't been added to for quite a while so bring us up to date if you have done more with your Savage bolt action. I have a lot of experience with a .32-20 and I'd be very pleased to share it with you. My rifles have always been Winchester lever actions but the cartridge is certainly the same. Right away I'd want to recommend that you get Lyman's mould #311008 (used to be #3118) for the 115 grain plain base bullet. That is a very good bullet, the original design for the .32 W.C.F. For your bolt action you could use Lyman's #311359, a pointed gas check design also weighing 115 grains. The gas check would allow higher velocities, up around 1500 fps but I'd say you shouldn't be too concerned with velocity while shooting a .32-20. My favorite powder for use in the .32-20 is simply Unique, and 5 grains is plenty, for about 1300 fps. You could also use 8 grains of 4759 for about 1400 fps. Bullet #311359 might be a little too long to work through your gun's magazine, or too long to remove from the rifle after it has been chambered, but Lyman also made a flat nosed version, #311316 and I have that mould with a hollow point. At any rate, the .32-20 is a real shootable cartridge that will give you a lot of pleasure. I do recommend that you cast your own bullets, that's simply part of making good ammo by yourself. Okay, let us know what you've been shooting lately. 303mike

Greetings from Ottawa, Canada!
I have played a bit with the 32-20 in my single shot Husqvarna. I think that H4227 is the ticket for this round and I have only used cast:
90gr - 14.0 H4227 (full case) no data 125gr - 12.0 H4227 - 1625 fps - my favorite. 157gr - 10.0 H4227 - 1315 fps 180gr - 8.0 H4227 - 1000 fps
The 180gr cast would not stabilize in my gun (not enough MV and too slow a twist in the barrel), but the others shot like champs. I consider these within one grain of max loads for a rifle, which would coincide with a full case (a near perfect combination). You can't go more than a grain lower, as then the pressure drops below the working level for H4227 and velocities get erratic.
I suspect that was the problem with your load of 10.0 grs of H-110 under the 123gr bullet. H-110 and H4227 have very similar burn rates, and I bet that a load of 11.0 grs of H-110 would give you much more consistent MV's.
