Picked up this un-beautiful, but very functional .351 at the Saxet show in Austin in September. Shoots very well. Looks like H-ll.

Are you thinking about restoring the wood or leave as is? Just curious, I have been restoring the wood on some of my older rifles.

What I hate to see, especially with Model 8s, is the wrist of the stock sanded so much that the top and bottom tangs of the action stand proud above the wood. You can spot it a mile away. My inclination is not to touch it, but I realize there are times when it is....O.K. (at most).

I don't remove checkering or heavy sanding on the stocks but if I can remove dents and put a London Oil finish that looks period then I will.

I'd clean it up as best I could but I wouldn't sand or refinish.
It's amazing to me for such a "forgotten gun" how much these 1907s were used way back then. How could they have been so popular up to the 1950s and then completely unknown now? For example, when I go to gun shows I look for 351 ammo and magazines and I always hear "what's that for?" When I tell them they always have a blank look on their faces.

Oh, I love that blank look when they're selling... it usually means I'm going to be able to purchase something for cheap. It is not so true now but back 10 years ago I was picking up ammo and magazines for what is now pretty cheap.

It's the ammo and mags for the 351 that kill you in terms of pricing. The guns are still relatively cheap. Look for that to change if 1) the Zootshooters start allowing them at their matches (a very real possibility) and 2) more people start signing up for Zootshooting (still a very small group of which I am one). However, the SASS guys started out small too and look at them now.

Me and my son went out last week when it was nice and shot some of our firearms. Here's a pic of me and the new to me Winchester .351 Model 1907 at the range.
