they're looking real purty now, used a cloth wheel and stainless steel buffing compound...they look almost chome plated! Just need to be blued.

Looking great 81. I had almost the same thing in mind for a home brewed wrench.

Project complete! The wrenches have been hot caustic blued and turned out fantastic...although the picture doesn't do them justice. They are a very close match of the originals.
I have to praise David R. Chicoine (www.oldwestgunsmith.com) for his work choosing the appropriate blue and doing an incredible job. I highly recommend his services to anyone in need of any type of blue or gun work. Check his website out!

81, send me your mailing addy. I'll send ya my 8 and you can use your wrench to fix it for me.
Actually to save on paperwork, we need to meet at the border and I'll toss it over the fence to you.
Wrenches look pretty good.

What's the chance that you still have some of these left and that I could maybe buy one from you?

I needed the barrel nut removed on my autoloading repeater without damage so I made a tool from a steel spacer. The ID is just less than 3/4" and wide enough for M6 x 1.00 stud with the end ground to a round peg. I wish I could upload a few pics. Nice original though. Here is a link to the Texas Gun Talk post with pics of the tool. www.texasguntalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=77923&p=1512814#post1512814bob

I know this is an old thread but if anyone is still following it: Firstly, great work 81. I know something as mundane as a spanner wrench is rarly this interesting. Being as how there aren’t many out there, You and/or the others in position of one definitely have nice little nugget of history.
Secondly, does the $13 choke tube wrench work well on model 8/81’s? I noticed it only has 1 tip on it. I hate to even admit it but I put a towel over the end of my barrel and used a pair of pliers to twist the nut off. Thankfully it was realativly loose and I didn’t leave any marks. I inherited the gun from my father and of course I took it to the range and pulled it apart to clean it before researching it’s history.
If anyone has any experience with the wrench suggested in this thread or any other tools that have worked well (and don’t require much fabrication, I’d appreciate your input. Thanks
