A couple months ago, I picked up a like new Model 96 levergun at the local gun shop where I teach Tennessee Handgun Permit Classes. While I usually prefer traditional lever action rifles like Winchesters and Marlins, I'll admit to also owning a Winchester Model 88 in 308.
This little Ruger is a slick carbine that has a one piece stock and a removeable 4 round magazine. It shoots quite well and recoil, as you would expect, is light. It isn't fancy by any means, but it will make a good plinker and short range rifle. Ruger has discontinued the 99/44 and it has developed something of a "cult" following.
I'm still looking for a good Savage 99 in 250 or 300 Savage. These rifles are seldom seen in my neck of the woods. A 99 is one "itch" that I've got to scratch! ;D

Cool. I put one on order when they were announced, even bought some ammo. Never got the rifle. I really liked the look, as well as the M 88 Win and Savage 99. I've always been interested in a 44 Mag carbine, just haven't got one, yet.

The 44 is another favorite cartridge of mine. I also own a 96/44, a Ruger 44 Carbine, and Marlin 1894PG in 44Rem Mag and a Ruger Super Redhawk in the same caliber. Up here in the north woods of NY, the whitetails do not go very far at all when hit with a 44mag. Of them all, I am the most disapointed with the 96/44. While quite accurate and relatively mild to shoot, the action on mine is very loose and clackity, for lack of a better word. At lock up, it doesn't take much of a movement to get the lever loose and the action itself seems very sloppy. I bought mine new and have put 50 or so rounds thru it. No malfunctions or anything, just very sloppy feeling. TN, does your's feel that way also, or do I have a odd ball?

2verpsters,
My 96/44 doesn't feel like your description at all. Mine is very smooth and locks up well. It is the only one I've worked with, so I can't say if mine is "run-of-the-mill" or not. Have you called Ruger about the issue with yours?

I have, but they don't have much to say other than each rifle is alittle different. It's not like mine will just fall open with out provocation, but just seems cheap or chinsy. Compared to the Marlins I own, the action on the 96 just leaves me wanting/expecting a better fit. Perhaps I got a Friday afternoon or Monday morning special from Ruger.

450, I have always wanted to own an 88 and it's auto brother, the 100. Preferably in 284 Winchester, just to be different from anything else I own. I would also love to find a nice 99 in 250-3000 as I'm a fan of the quarter bores. All 3 are still on the wish list as I can't seem to quit finding and buying Model 8's. The 88's and 100's are getting pretty pricey from what I see, and an untouched 99 is pretty steep too. But sooner or later, I hope to find all 3.

TNrifleman,
I have a Savage model 99 G in 300 Savage that was made in 1927. I could be persuaded to part with it. Send me a PM and I will send some pictures if you are interested.

Tnrifleman-- Just wanted to show that finds are still out there. Story is I bought this several years ago at a shop in E.Ontario. Seems back in the early 60's, a lady figured her Lawyer husband should enjoy deer hunting with her brothers at their hunting lodge in the north woods. She bought him this gun as a present and packed him up. Apparently he fired two shots to sight gun, never got a shot off at any deer after that, came home and gun never left closet again untill he passed away a few years ago.... Then never out of mine... 300sav.99M/DL made in 1960.

450Yukon,
That is quite a find. You and Silvermino have encouraged me to continue my Savage 99 quest. The 99 is an uncommon rifle in the area where I live.

It is quite a bit different than the more traditional lever action rifles like Marlins and Winchesters. However, mine does shoot quite well and is a handy little rifle.

Where I live in southwestern Oregon the Savage 99 is very common although the prices have really skyrocketed in the last few years, but I see dozens and have bought and sold two nice ones including a takedown in 30-30 Winchester and a clip fed .308. I see alot of 300 Sav and even a handful of the 250-3000. If anyone is looking for a specific model let me know and I will keep an eye out for you.

450Yukon,
Man, you're killing me! I'm kidding, of course,, but those are some great looking Model 99 rifles. BTW, I have a Marlin lever gun chambered for the 375 Winchester cartridge and I really like the combination.
I may have found my 99.... stay tuned!
