Reproduction and original factory sling swivels can be found on ebay from time to time. Just forward of the forearm you will find a screw in the barrel jacket, this is your front sling swivel base, screw size #10-36. I've never purchased one but John Henwood recommends the Uncle Mike's part number "SS81REM" for this location. The stock you will have to tap I dont know any brands but all slings on 8/81's i've seen are heavy leather. Hope this is mildly helpful!

As much as I appreciate the utility of a sling on a hunting rifle, I haven't yet been able to bring myself to put one on my 81. I've drilled the butt stocks on several other rifles and even a Remington Model 870 that I sometimes use for deer hunting, but my 81....

Well, I found some slings that don't require any drilling, but they aren't really correct for the period. Scroll down to the shotgun slings. www.gunslingsdirect.com/vv-ac.html

gramps35,
I really appreciate the utility of a sling/carry strap for a hunting rifle. Anyone who ever tried to drag a deer out of the woods while carrying a rifle knows a carry strap is a good thing. Those slings will work, even if not "period correct." For those of us who can't/won't drill an 8/81 stock, this is an answer. Thanks for sharing.

You know, I checked that website that granps35 mentioned, www.gunslingsdirect.com, and bought one. It's a Vero Vellini shotgun sling that loops around the barrel and stock. Nice padded sling that carries nice. I'll be using it with my models 8, 141 and smoke pole this deer season. I recommend 'em if you don't want to mount any swivels.

outlaw, I am sure you have long figured a way to put your sling on by now but in case others are looking for an idea here's my thoughts... (I never said they were any good!) My Grandfather's Fox Sterlingworth shotty has a heavy leather boot that slips over the butt and is then laced up. A fellow I am sure could figure out a way to incorporate a sling attachment on there without having to drill your stock. The top could be done like already mentioned. FWIW if you are tough (ignorant of pain), or just plain crazy you could simply put a leather lace on your rifle like Martin did with his. After a couple hours the pain will go away- when the nerve endings die that is! It is so fine you can barely see it in the pic.

Figured I'd better give a post deer season field report on my new sling. Hunted Thanksgiving week in WV. In camp were me with my Rem model 8 .35, and 2 cousins, one with a Rem 141 .35 and one with a Winchester 94 .32 Special (all open sights). All three of us got deer, mine a nice fat doe. Off hand shot at 50 yards took the top right off the heart and put her down. For the drag out, took my new sling out of the pack, put it on and it carried great - no slipping off the shoulder, even while dragging the deer through timber. $35 well spent...or you could go supersport40's route with the leather...or there's always the ol' duct tape and bailin' wire! Hope you all had a nice Christmas!
