For you guys fortunate enough to own an 8 or 81 in 30 Remington, I found 18 boxes of factory ammo for sale over on the 24 Hour Campfire Forum in the Free Classifieds. The seller is in Texas.
Remington 170 grain Core Lokt soft point
$30 per box, or buy it all for $25 per box. Not exactly a "fire sale" but considering today's ammo prices, it isn't out of line.

I reload for my 30 Rem, model 81 using an old hand and hammer Lee Loader made for a 30/30. I bought some bulk brass and usually select 150 grainers, but you can us any bullet made for a 30/30. You can use any pointed bullet too.
Except for the rim the 30 Rem and the 30/30 are identical.

Thanks for the information. $25 a box wouldn't be too bad. But a $450 investment in ammo is quite a bit.

I've seen the original empty boxes of 25, 30, and 32 Rem (with only Styrofoam inside), go for $40-60 at the Big Gun Show in Reno and I was told they go for more then that at the show in Lose Wages.
I'm not an ammo collector but was fortunate to find some full and partial full boxes of original at a local show a year or so ago (before all ammo went out of sight) - I paid around $30/box then and I still think I got a good buy.
Had been just shooting up my .35's, because I was finding it cheap at all the shows, not seeing it so much anymore at any price. Think I'll even start holding on to them. As a cautionary note: I have had a couple of hangfire's - up to a count of 3 once in a while with the old ammo. Thus I only use it cautiously, when I'm alone, or very few others are present and they are aware of what I'm shooting. Back to the ammo matter, it's getting harder and harder to find all ammo in the occupied territory. I almost waited too late to get 38spl, last Friday for the wife, as she needed it Sat. for our CCW class. Had to go to 4 different store. (I now even have my name on a list with a friend at one store, every time they get specific ammo I'm looking for in, she'll start calling down the list!) Last gun show I went to opened at 9am, by 1pm you were too late for most regular ammo at less then retail and you had very few options. And I won't even get started on what they are actually debating regarding ammo sellers and owners on the CA legislative floor! Who would have thought it would come to this in our life time?

Mitch,
I hear you! The ammo situation here in Tennessee isn't much better. Both ammo and reloading components are in short supply. The local Sportsman's Warehouse used to have a huge amount of both, but lately, when they get ANYTHING in, it is bought up in a hurry by anxious folks. I hope things settle down soon, but I don't see that happening.

What I do is take the same 40 pieces of brass and reload them over and over again with my little Lee Loader, some IMR 3031 and boxes of 150 grain or 170 grain round nose .30-30 bullets. Remington quit making .30 Remington in 1997. I don't know of a reliable source of factory loaded .30 Remington ammo now today except for the gun auction sites. There you will pay a premium for the stuff. I still like to check out small town hardware stores, especially the independent owned stores for old ammo. In the 1990s and up into the 2000s, I found quite a bit of nice .30 Remington and even some .32 Remington (and other goodies like .33 WCF, .348 WCF, .351, .401WSL and .38 ACP) ammo in these small town stores for very reasonable prices. Lately this seems to have dried up pretty much. I think you can still find unprimed .30 Remington brass for sale. Sometimes gunshows will turn up a little bit of Remington autoloader ammo. I can think of one raggedy bag of about 15 rounds of .32 Remington that I've seen at a local gun show on one sellers table for about 3 years now. I just can't bring myself to plunk down the money to buy it because I think it's a little high.....though that price is getting more and more reasonable as time goes by...

Now you need to shoot up a bunch of that ammo. You need to get yourself a Remington Model 8 or 81....or perhaps a Remington 14 or 141 pump....or mayhaps a Stevens 425 or a Remington Model 30....in .32 Rem.
