So my father and I had been at our place in west Texas all weekend looking for big whitetails and neither of us had seen anything other than does, spikes, and fork horns. A slight bit frustrated from not seeing any decent bucks all year, I decided to take my father's Ruger Super Blackhawk revolver in .44 Rem Mag, set up in a tree bow blind, and shoot a doe. After sitting like a vegetable for 2 hours all I had seen were spikes till this little 8 pointer comes walking in. Full grown with his horns probably maxed out for his life I decided to shoot him, the perfect cull buck. I pulled back the hammer as slowly and quietly as I could but he heard it and stared straight at me for about 30 seconds. Wow talk about a rush! I'm not a bow hunter so I've never been up close like that. When he turned his head I took the shot at 20 yards with factory iron sights and the buck dropped in his tracks, never took a step. I was jacked up! Got him back to camp about 2 miles away and he weighed in at 150lbs. I've never shot anything other than squirrels with a handgun prior to this; and by no means a trophy deer, but I'll never forget this hunt as one of the most exciting to date! Oh and if anbody wants their single action revolver to feel like butter i'd recommend the guy who did my father's Blackhawk, Bob Munden... www.bob-munden.com/

Congratulations! I think that is quite a thing, to be able to dispatch a nice buck like that with a handgun. I bet 20 yards with iron sighted handgun is a lot farther than one would imagine. Keep us posted.

I was just thinking that kind of hunt would suit the model 8 perfectly. Open sights plus mediocre accuracy makes it about a 100 yard rifle maximum and it sounds like your stand is good for close shots. With mutiple deer tags available in Texas have you taken a deer with an 8/81 yet? If so I would like to see some pics. Here in Oregon we get one general season tag, which I use for archery hunting, an the only extra tag available is an antlerless tag for the most part so I have yet to hunt with a rifle although I think it is about time to give it a try. 25 years of bowhunting and I think its time to try out my rifle collection.

kirk,
depends on the county you're hunting. I hunt Mitchell which has a bag limit of 5 deer, no more than 2 bucks all seasons combined. You also have 2 mule deer tags, buck and doe if you end up hunting in a county that allows it.
We should start a model 8/81 hunt picture thread, I like your idea.

Congratulations on taking a fine buck with a Ruger SBH. There's nothing like getting up close and personal with a whitetail deer. I've read that Bob Munden does a fine job on single action revolvers. It's good to read what an actual customer has to say about his work. One thing for sure, he can sure shoot! I've watched him on video and he is amazing.

tnrifleman,
I really appreciate the compliment. The cool thing about Bub Munden action jobs is that they're done by Bob Munden and nobody else. He's done a couple of my father's Rugers and his work is exceptional, plus its cool to sit down on wednesday nights and watch him perform on Impossible Shots!
