I recently purchased my first Model 8, technically a Remington Autoloading Rifle since it is of 1907 production, and have a few questions about it. The first is caliber. The seller said it was .30 Remington, but the marking on the gun has unfortunately been scratched or filed off. What remains of it to me looks more like a 5, suggesting .35 Remington. Is there any other way to verify what caliber it is? Also, the forestock is a replacement, but fits the rifle well. It is checkered and of a finer wood, and I'm assuming it came from a later model 81, but cannot confirm this. Any help would be greatly appreciated. imgur.com/a/m2CIMwVimgur.com/a/aBASATjimgur.com/a/fxWw6Atimgur.com/a/EmZow8Z

I believe that, considering the production in 1907 and the position of the partially seen number on your gun that your barrel was originally marked with the briefly used Winchester style cartridge nomenclature and was either ".25-35 Rem" or "30-30 Rem". Since your think that last number is a five, you may have a .25 Remington caliber gun. You could try to measure the diameter of the bore in the barrel, and I would also suggest looking at the bolt face. If memory serves me, I believe the bolt face is marked either "30" or "35". The .25 Remington, .30 Remington and .32 Remington all used the "30" bolt face and the "35" bolt face was used on the .35 Remington and .300 Savage.

the barrel adaptor is defaced .like Hardrada55 suggested look at the bore measurement .Or since they come take down easily you could chose to have a chamber cast done and verify exactly what it is and it doesn't take long and thats the route I would take .

Thanks for the answers. I don't see any markings on the bolt face. A rough measurement of the bore rules out .25 Rem. Did they only use the extended nomenclature (30-30 Rem and 25-35 Rem) on those two calibers or did .32 Rem and .35 Rem have a different designation as well? If it is just those two, and since I ruled out .25, then I could assume it is a .30 Rem. imgur.com/a/liaE5GV
