Found a Standard Arms in 35 Remington today for $550.00. It appears to my untrained eye to be in really good and original condition. Are they worth anything? Its pump forearm and buttplate was highly decorated metal and very neat looking. I have only caught bits and pieces about how they operate, but I gather that they are semi-auto and the pump is just to load the first round in it or something. Feel free to enlighten me as to all of the above. I am unsure if they have any real value at all and whether $550.00 is fair or way way up there.

There is a Model G that is a gas operated semi-automatic and a Model M that is purely a pump action. Wonderful section on these guns in the 8 and the 81 by Henwood. Layne Simpson did an article on them several years back and he noted that they seemed to be sensitive to the quality of ammunition used and the temperature at which the gun was fired. i.e. the colder it was the more likely the semi-auto was not to cycle properly. That and I have heard stories that some of the internal parts were not properly hardened and so are prone to breakage. Had a gunsmith friend of mine tell me his ejected empties about 2 stories high and that they invariably came down right on the top of his head. I bought a broken one several years back. Maybe one of these days I'll get a better one. 81police. I love the peep sight on that one you posted from GB.

I am still eyeballing one of these in 35 Rem in a pawn shop. The owner is sure it will not sell very fast at $550.00 and in very good condition, and I may offer him $450.00 if its still there after I get through the Christmas spending season.

For years and years these standard rifle were considered as pure junk. It had to do with that embossed brass, I'd guess. They are strange looking rifles. Do they shoot well? I've never heard of anyone shooting one.
I always thought that they were neat however; but I don't own one.
I believe that 35 Rem is a great caliber. It's as good as a 30/30 only better.
